nope, carbon does virtually nothing in a fish tank, the only time when they are useful is when you want to remove medication or colors in the water. Make sure to wash it first before you put it in, or else you would have black water And also if you are not trying to remove medication or colors, don't even bother to put it in.

Hello Jace. I have to respectively disagree with fishnewbie. The choice to use activated carbon or not is of course a personal opinion. I use it religiously in all of my tanks and I change it out every 3 weeks. It's said to collect minerals from the water that may not be good for the aquarium. I know for a fact it eliminates bad odors, removes medications, removes tanis color caused by driftwood. It helps to keep my water crystal clear as well.

I wouldn't worry too much about over dosing with carbon. I mean don't do it on purpose, use the suggested amounts. Always rinse it first.

You're going to receive pros and cons on the subject. Some use it like I do...some don't. Some will use it when they need and then remove it. I suggest trying it both ways and see what works for you and your tank.

I agree that it's a personel preference. I don't use it unless to help filter meds out. Besides my tanks do well without it anyways.......water is clear, besides keeping up on your water changes keeps the water clear and clean for happy healthy fish. Hopefully. At least that's my opinion.
