Would Styrofoam balls make a good filter media?

Title basically explains the question. I'm thinking more for canister filters or some sort of filter where the media is contained since Styrofoam floats.

Hey Red. I'm just guessing but I would have to say no on the styrofoam balls. It isn't porous and it wouldn't be able to contain the beneficial bacteria that is needed. Let's get some more responses though before you make a decision. I could very well be wrong here.

I'd agree with Ken. After a while the styroforms will break down and create a mess in your tank.
Red, you're always thinking!

thanks guys
I wasn't sure. I know that styrofoam plates are used for spawning with bubble nest builders, and I think it's basically inert. Thought it would be an interesting solution.

If you go to a craft store, they sell a different kind of foam ball; the kind used to make mobiles of planets for science class and whatnot. Those are rough and porous, so they may work.

You may still have problems with them breaking down over time, though.

i think the non porous kind might work if you were to break it apart and use the bits inside a larger container or mesh bag. the kind at the craft store, however, tends to break down pretty quick in water.
