Sucked up sand - broke my Aqueon filter?

I accidentally sucked up some sand (a very small amount) with an Aqueon 55. It gurgled then stopped. I unplugged it and checked everything: The impeller turns freely, there's nothing obstructing any of the areas you can actually see (which are few, since the impeller is integrated with the pump motor).

It won't start back up.

Any ideas?

Pete <-- bummed that he just ruined a filter

i'm not quite sure how an aqueon filter wroks or what kind of filter it is, but i know with my HOB filters, i'd have to take apart everything, brush/rinse everything out, and then put it back together sometimes to get it to start normally. hopefully you can get yours up and working again!

Do you have a warranty? if so, you could return it and get another one.. I have heard of members unplugging their filters. Move the sand around, and then waiting for it to sink to the bottom, and then start up the filter again...

Impellers and the actual motor is usually replaceable. I'm not to familiar with aqueon's but i know Aquaclears come in 3 parts. Impeller, Motor, and Filter box. I'd take it apart as much as i can and rinse with fresh water. Keep flushing water through it then put it together and see what happens.

@griffin

The motor and impeller assembly is pretty much all sealed. You can't take anything apart.

@Tony

Came as part of a 55g kit, and I'm using the rest of that kit right now . There was very very little sand, but obviously that filter is touchy. I may write aqueon and see if they'll send me another motor/impeller assembly.
