Older Whisper Filter info needed

Hey everyone. Quick question.
I recently bought a couple of tanks and a box of supplies at a yard sale.
There were a couple of filters in there.

I set one uo on a 20g. The lid says Secondnature Whisper Power Filter.
On the part that covers the intake is the number 2.
It came with a bunch of filter pouches.
I know they hold carbon or I can use floss or whatever in there.
I thought the sponges were missing.

I googled the heck out of this filter and couldn't find anything about a bio-sponge. Went shopping today and couldn't find any made for this filter so I bought some I'll cut to fit.

While at at the store the girl said some of the filters only take the pouch not both. I know their smaller filters are like that.
So I get home, look in the filter and sure enough, there's no place for the sponge.

Am I missing something or were they really made just to have the pouch?
I plan on sticking a seeded sponge in the pouch. How's that sound?

Thanks!

not sure the brand of mine , but I got one with a couple of my tanks and I threw out the pouches and put my own floss in where the pouches go LOL ....also bought a small bag of already premade carbon to cram in there also hahah..mine has like a divider slit where you put one part of a pouch and then another..but I still used my own..I know that was a ton of help

Second Nature merged with Tetra and old whisper filter did not have any sponges nor frame for it. I am sure you can still find room for foam sponges in fron of BioBag. Only foam sponges on Second Nature filter was Wed/Dry version which was not that great. It uses cartridges called Bio-Bags. I am sure Bio Bags are still avail as they are also used for newer version. It is good filter and will last long time. Should be able to find impeller if you need one so dont throw it out. Filter is a filter.

I knew I should have asked ya'll sooner! lol
That's exactly what I needed to know.

Is there anyway to tell what size tank the filter is rated for? The only clue is the #2 on the lid where it goes over the intake.

Personally, usually 20 G but depend on inhabitants may go bit higher (taller tank). I would not use in 36" long tank as it may not circulate the water that well in such long tank.
Even if impellers is not working properly, still dont throw out the impeller. LMk when such happens.

if you look underneath/on the back side, the filter itself, theres usually a model number...google it and it will pull up the exact filter

I tend to under stock, so I should be ok for a while. The intake reaches within an inch of the bottom of the tank.
The dimensions of the tank are 24 x 12 x 17.
One other filter looks to be about the same size (no markings on the lid) and another filter has a J on it, found out that stands for Junior so if need be, I can also add one of those filters and run 2.

I glanced at that but didn't really see any numbers.....have to get my magnifying glass out.

Thanks bunches, you've both been of great help. Looks like the tank switch-a-roos will take place tomorrow!

As Shawnie said, should have model # on the bottom of black housing. Jr is goof for 5 g. Dont bother as BB cost will be too high.

Those bb can be jet sprayed with moderate force, dried and be reused. This will save you some money. HeHe! Just changed the carbon. I used one B/B for an year on seahorse tank before it got ripped apart.

No, I've got extra sponges in my other tanks. I'm going to put one of those in the filter to seed it
I'll do it when I switch the fish over.

All over. lol In Cami's tank (one of my bettas) I have some shoved up the out take to decrease the flow and inside the filter. Another it's behind the filter intake and the rest stuffed in the filters.
I also have an extra bio-wheel just floating around a tank.

Tony, I don't have a video camera. My camera takes videos but for some reason the files are always too large up upload anywhere. I don't understand those things.

They're too big to e-mail. I've tried compressing but I guess I do it wrong.

That would work too.

Edit: I've cleaned the thread up a bit.

Hi Lucy,

I actually have one of these running on my 10g tank now. Like you, I picked up a whole bunch of misc fish stuff and included was (2) of these Second Nature Whisper filters.

Anyway, I just used the normal Whisper Bio-Bags in mine (I shoved 2 in there because just one seemed too wimpy). When I get home from work, I'll check the actual size, etc. It seems to do a pretty good job. My tanks are way understocked so I'm sure that helps too.

If you want, PM me an email address and I can scan and send you some original instructions that I got with mine...

Let me know
Steve
