Used Filter

I have a fully cycled filter that was used for about 3 months. I got a bigger tank and needed a bigger filter so I used this one to aide in the cycling of the bigger filter. Now this filter has been sitting for about a month in a cupboard. Can I assume the good bacteria has all died off? Or is this filter ok to sit without water? I don't have any immediate plans for it, but just wanted to know.

Thanks in advance!

Any beneficial bacteria is dead already. I would rinse the filter media and place it in the biggest tank you are keeping to be ready for your next tank or just as complimentary filtration.

Good morning. I agree with pepetj. I would add the filter itself to the tank for additional filtration (as long as your fish can handle the current) or just add the filter media from the old filter into the new filter or even the tank itself. Seeding it will definitely give you a jump start should you want an additional tank. Too, you can never have too much filter media in my opinion. Best of luck with the new set up! Have fun!

Thank you both for your advice!!! I will probably add it to the bigger tank's filter and use it when I need it! Great idea! And Aquarist48...congrats on becoming a moderator!!
