cascade 700 filter media

i have a cascade 700 filter that i bough used. i would like some help on what filter media should go into it and what order? like does the filter floss go first then the bio rings than active carbon. or is there some other order. the filter only has to trays is it ok to put in more than one media per tray? i have a communty tank with some guppyies, mollies, Dwarf Gourami, aferican dwarf frogs, red claw crabs, glo fish, clown louches, sucker fish, and an angle fish.

I could only find the manufacture's filters being used (http://www.aquacave.com/cascade-700-...plax-1553.html). One fine filter floss and one course. They say that the course is for the BB, but I have not seen one of these in person, so I do not know if it is a fill-able tray or what. If it is, I would still suggest to use fine filter floss in the top (#1) tray and then you could use "bio rings" or some other form of biological media. Make sure to wash it well and make sure to not overfill.

As far as dual media in one tray, I have never done this or read about it being done, but it is possible. Using Carbon will remove any types of chemicals/medications that are administered and should*n't* be used when having a planted tank (which you don't have), so watch out.

I used to use a Cascade 1000, but I can't quite remember what media came with it, so I'll just tell you about the way I set up all the other canisters I use, LOL.

On the bottom tray, I have a coarse foam pad. This filters out the larger particulate matter. Next, there is a layer of finer media. I just cut filter floss to fit. This catches the smaller particles that the coarse pad didn't get. Then, in the top tray, there is biological media. In my case, it is Rena's Bio stars because my filters are XPs and that's what came with them. However, it doesn't matter what brand you use. Ceramic rings work well and are cheaper than bio stars. As long as the media is porous, it provides lots of surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. Don't replace your bio media, just rinse it in tank water when you are maintaining your filter. Hope this helps!
