I used to use a Cascade 1000, but I can't quite remember what media came with it, so I'll just tell you about the way I set up all the other canisters I use, LOL.
On the bottom tray, I have a coarse foam pad. This filters out the larger particulate matter. Next, there is a layer of finer media. I just cut filter floss to fit. This catches the smaller particles that the coarse pad didn't get. Then, in the top tray, there is biological media. In my case, it is Rena's Bio stars because my filters are XPs and that's what came with them. However, it doesn't matter what brand you use. Ceramic rings work well and are cheaper than bio stars. As long as the media is porous, it provides lots of surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. Don't replace your bio media, just rinse it in tank water when you are maintaining your filter. Hope this helps!
