Just picked up a used aqua clear 500.

And its loud as heck.

Sounds like there is something stuck in between the propeller or something.

I took it apart and found nothing, any ideas on how to fix this?

Good morning. Try taking out the impeller and pour some Nova Aqua or whatever chemical you use to add a slime coat to your fish onto the impeller. It may help.

If you took out the impeller and inspected it to make sure there were no chips, cracks, or burrs on the blades ... prehaps try the following.....

- Did you check to see if the impeller 'stem' was bent when you took it apart?

- Take a Q-Tip and clean inside the housing where the impeller sits ... flushing it with warm water periodically as you go.

- As aquarist48 mentioned ... after cleaning (and if there is no visual damage to any components), try coating the the interior impeller housing and the impeller shaft with a light coat of a water conditioner that contains a slime coat enhancer.

- Make sure the lid is seated properly. Also, even when seated properly, sometimes the lid itself can seemingly enhance impeller related noise. Try removing the lid and see if it quiets down.

- Check and make sure the intake tube is seated correctly.

Make sure there is absolutely No air trapped in there and it is primed. We have an Eheim which sounds terrible if there is any air , it sounds like a stone trapped, It's actually cavitation of the impeller which is similar to over revving the car engine.
