which one should i use?

hi everyone, hope your all well?

well its official i have got the bug lol ive already got the juwel rekord 600 and ive just ordered the 800

I am going to cycle the new tank with one of the sponges from the 600 which has been mature for 1 month now, it should be a straight swap as the filters are the same, but which one do i take out, does it matter? There wouldnt be any harmful effects to my 600 by swapping sponges would there?

Do you have a pic of the filtration systems? I'm totally unfamiliar with the Juwel aquariums since I live in the US. If your Juwel 600 has multiple sponges, I'd say that you could safely swap one out to jump start the cycle on your Juwel 800. If there is only one sponge, I think it would be risky. An alternative to taking a sponge from your Juwel 600 would be to put the sponges from your Juwel 800 into the 600 for a couple weeks. You can just float them in the tank if they don't fit in the filter. That would seed the new sponges and again, give you a nice jump start.

hiya thanks for your reply,

im not sure how to post pics but heres the link if you click the pic to enlarge you can see it better, this is the juwel 600 you can see the internal filter in the corner:

they are the same filters which come with 3 seperate sponges in, one is for nitrate, another is carbon, so i should be able to swap one over into my new new then?

Ive heard that the cycle shouldnt take long at all if i did that, the main reason ive got a bigger tank is that ive adopted a keyhole cichlid from my brother (more like rescued tbh) he was told it was a bolivian ram which only reaches 3 inch max, however it turns out to be a keyhole cichlid that can reach 5 inch it wasnt getting on well with his current tank m8's so ive got him now.Im considering swapping a sponge then dosing with TTS and adding about 6 minnows to get the cycle started, does that sound ok?

tbh i wouldnt swap the media over and do a fishless cycle with some squeasing of the old filter into the new tank a couple of days after it is first setup, because the tank is only 1mth matured and the remaining bacteria may cause you a mini cycle and then you would be having 2 cycling tanks not 1

Mini cycles are not that big of a deal and easily controlled with a few extra water changes. Still, I think your best bet is to float your new sponges in your 600 for a couple of weeks, then set up the 800 and add the keyhole along with the sponge. I've started many tanks this way and it's worked great every time.

thanks for you replies,

i think your right i will float them in the 600 tank for a couple of weeks instead of taking one out and swapping, i dont wanna upset my fish.

thanks xx
