Aquaclear 110 over kill?

A relative just gave us a 20 gallon tank with at least 20 guppies and few algae eaters with no filter. I saw a used Aquaclear 110 for cheap. I plan to upgrade to a larger tank in the future but not anytime soon. I wanted to get something that I can use now and then hopefully in the future as I upgrade. Is the AC 110 an overkill for my 20 gallon tank or is it alright to use at the lowest setting?

(some guppies are babies by the way)

Thanks

welcome to fishlore!IMO its way overkill for the fish you have.....usually im all for extra filtration but that will do 70-100 gals...i think your babies would be like flying over niagra falls LOL id still get it if its a great deal...especially if you are upgrading

LOL. Thanks for the warm welcome Shawnie and I particularly like the joke about flying over Niagra Falls .

Anyway, the person wanted $25 for the AC 110 used for 5 months along with extra new carbon bag, sponge , extra extension tube for tall Aquarium , and ceramic ring. I thought that's a steal.

Thanks for your suggestion. I will proceed in getting it from the guy and will try it out to see if the babies actually fly over Niagra Falls LOL.

I agree with Shawnie that the 110 (500gph) is a bit strong for a 20g tank. You could actually diffuse the flow rate by adding some floss to the out take on the filter (the spout). It wouldn't hurt to try and see how the fish handle it. $25 is a steal. I think I paid $89 for mine new. Too, if you do decide to use it, I suggest adding a sponge or filter floss to the intake tube as well so the fish don't get stuck to it. Have fun!

Current wise you might be OK on the low flow setting (166 GPH). However, you may have problems with the strength of the intake being too strong given your smaller fish. While the AC 20, 30, 50, and 70 all share the same motor (simply using varying sizes of impellers which in some cases can be used in a different model), the AC 110 warrants a motor of it's own and utilizes a larger intake tube.

I say get the AC110 and store it safely. For the 20gal get a good sponge filter (yes the ones that work with airpump, like the Hagen Elite dual sponge) and a small not expensive HOB, like the Resun 2001 that will cost around 10USD.

I have three AC110 in my 145gal Oscar tank. I love them.
