Clear Water

Hi Everyone!

Since setting up the 500L tank, I've been having trouble clearing the small particle matter in the water. The filter doesn't seem to capture it. I was so use to having crystal clear water in the 60L tank.
I added a layer of 25mm blue sponge to what I already have installed 3 layers of white padding.
Is there anything I am missing, or is the quality of the filter brand something to do with it where it will be as good as it gets? It shouldn't make any difference if all the pump is doing is pulling the water through the various layers, which it does quite well.
I have noodles and gravel in two of the three chambers, and carbon in the third.

Hello Life. I'm not familiar with the filter type that you have listed in your profile. What is the GPH? Have you ever considered a Diatom Filter? http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/205477/product.web I use this every 10 days when I do a water change. They are WONDERFUL. I run it for about 6 hours. The water stays crystal clear, no algae blooms. It filters to the micron, can filter some ammonia to a certain degree, parasites. I've been using this type for years.
Too, as of March I've been using the H.O.T. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...97&pcatid=3597 Also filters to the micron. You can use diatomaceous earth with this one as well. (also found at LOWE's)
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...97&pcatid=3597 The HOT can actually be used around the clock. I use it for water changes only on my 26g tank and it does a great job using a micron cartridge.

Hi aquarist48
The filter is rated at 370gph. I was hoping that I could improve on the layers in the canister. Thanks for the info. I have to decide how much the particles bother me before I go down that path.

Life are you only running the one filter on the 500L? If so, I would seriously consider looking into additional full time filtration.

I did have my Eheim 2213 running with it for awhile, and I'm sure the water was much clearer, but of course, if there wasn't an issue, I probably wasn't paying too much attention.
I may throw the Eheim back onto it again and invest in a small internal for the 60L which is running very clear right now. The Eheim is being wasted on the 60L and probably be perfect in tandem with my other filter.

That sounds like a good idea. I hope all your little buddies are doing well. You have such a beautiful tank.

Thanks. They all seem happy. I will probably regret buying the mollies. I have a few 'fat' ones coming along, and it turns out the seven fry in the 60L tank are silver mollies. I'm not sure there is a market for them...we'll see. They've been join by a few Glass Shrimps. I only have half left of my original order, so I think that was not a very good deal!
