Is Fluval 405 enough for 120gal tank???

Hi,
I purchased an 120gal tank and setup and it came with a fluval 405 filter. I was thinking that the fluval wasn't enough for 120gals. It says up to 100 gallons. The filter itself is in good shape, although I emptied it and am going to wait and recycle my tank when I'm done with the DIY background. Can you please tell me if I shoul use it alone, with something or sell it and put moneys towards a more powerful one.
Aloha, Cam

Hi cam!
IMO no its not big enough...it only does 225 GPH according to its specs and good for tanks up to 100 gal...you should have at least double the size ...and also, it depends on what you are going to stock that tank with? bigger fish require extra filtration where as community tanks dont......that is an awesome tank tho!! but I would add another filter to it or price out some bigger canisters....it all depends on how much more money you want to spend....

cool thanks shawnie. your always there to answer my questions. What made me look into the filter specs, is while i was cleaning the tank "scraping with razor blade" I noticed excessive algae on the glass. Do you have any filters in mind that are good but not too expensive.

I agree that the 405 is not enough filtration on its own. Probably your most cost effective option is to add a large hang on back filter like the Aquaclear 110 (my preference) or the Emperor 400. If you can afford to add another canister, I'd suggest another 405 or a Rena XP3. Both are nice for the money.

aww ty cam...harpua gave some great suggestions that are affordable..as im a cascade penn plax lover and they arent cheap but I have them on most of my tanks because I use to be severely overstocked...make sure you take pics along the way for us to see its progress!! do you know what you are going to stock it with?

Thanks Harpua, I'm really not sure what I'm going to stock it with. I was thinking about transfering my fish from my 80tall into it and picking up a couple more fish.

I'll probably just sell the 405 and pick up two HOB filters. Sound good ;0)

Even if you stock lightly I still think you need to add to your filtration, which it sounds like you will so good for you.

What is in your 80 tall?

Congrats on the new tank. I would suggest 2 Aqua Clear 110's. That will give you approximately 1000gph. You want filtration to be 8 to 10 x your tank volume for best results. Good luck and hope you remember to send some pictures our way once you're done.

Right now I have a marble superveil tail angel, gold severum, bala shark, rainbow shark, 2 synodontis eupteris, silver veil tail angel, 2 chinese algae eaters. Note; the green severum is no longer in there. I didn't want to but had to get rid of her because of harrassement.

HOB's IMO are ok but not for the bigger tanks...I think you need at least one good size canister...but thats just from what ive dealt with on my tanks..maybe others have goodluck with HOB's with bigger tanks...I think once you go over 55 gals, the HOB arent good enough again thats just me love your angels!!!

I would definitely go with a larger canister as Shawnie suggested. And I would also consider adding an AquaClear to go along with it.

Hey Shawnie, Harpua and others,
I sold the fluval 405 and I'm gonna pick up an eheim 2250 canister, just wanted to see what you think about the 2250. Hope to hear from you soon.
