I have a Rena XP3 on my 46G bowfront and XP4 along with AquaClear 110 on my 90G.
I like them well enough.
These two are the only canisters I have ever used, so I can't compare them with the others.

Many folks like Marineland C series canisters and other swear by the Eheim brand...

Which Rena are you considering and for what size tank?

It should do fine. It's very quiet and pretty easy to clean.
Just rinse out the sponges and swish the bio balls and ceramic rings (purchased separately) in tank water.
I rinse mine every 1.5 - 2 months, depending on return flow, and clean the impellor area every 4-6 months.

The only issue, for me, is I worry about getting the top back on after cleaning and it not leaking.
That was my main concern with using canisters after reading horror stories about canisters in general.
I just test it by tipping it to see if it will leak before hooking it back up.
If it leaks or drips, then I remove the top, wipe the gasket areas and put a very light coat of vasonline on the gaskets.

If you over stock your fish and/or feed heavily, you might consider adding a HOB for a little extra filtration, if you find it necessary.

I agree that the Filstar is a great filter, and an XP3 should be fine for your 55 gallon. I've also used Fluval and Cascade canisters and I prefer the Renas and Fluvals to the Cascade by a long shot. At the moment I have a 75 gallon with an XP2 and Aquaclear 110, and a 120 gallon with 2 XP3s, and both tanks are doing well.

never thought about using vasoline... i just always re-set the lid over and over untill it seated correctly!!!! nice!

i do love my XP3s thought.... nice size media trays, almost silent and easy to clean..... just wish the spray bar was adjustable!!! either shorter for mounting on the side or longer for the back
