Still haven't learnt

I've seen the advice. I've been on this planet almost 50 years and still getting caught out. Today, again I discovered the risk you take buying a 'bargain'. Doing maintenance on my internet filter, I busted the cover for the UV Light. Not impressed with myself.
I contacted the interstate company re: replacements, and was advised at the other end that the business that supplies these units to them is unreliable and may take 2 weeks to 3 months to get spare parts (whereas the more recognized brands parts I can get locally).
Well I kinda need it today!
Another lesson in choosing carefully and do the research - especially backup service on product, and that comes at a cost which, when it comes to filtration, should be paid. Apart from that, the filter pumps well.
By luck more than by design, I added my Eheim 2213 from my 60 litre tank to keep the bacteria going, so hopefully I can keep the tank running while I do my own, and hopefully successful repairs to the light cover. Doesn't look pretty, but fingers crossed...
Can't use the filter until the cover is back on - electricity and water still don't mix well. I've put fresh aquarium water into the canister, but I can't imagine the bacteria surviving 24 hours in this situation.

could you go to a hardware store and get a PVC end cap and just silicone it on until your light cover comes in? then pry it back off and put the new cover on when it comes in?

and if not, i think if you just put an airstone down in the bottom and let it bubble, your bacteria should be ok. change the water and maybe add a little pure ammonia if you have some around. or throw a piece of shrimp or fish in there. basically just treat it like you are cycling a tank. so your bacteria will have food.

I just got back after being away for a week. I took a chance and hoped the silicone would hold - lucky they were clean breaks, but I left the light off in case the heat may affect the seal.
The supplier made contact with me and I should get two replacements next week all going well.
