You know a filter is quiet when...

...the power goes out and you don't notice a difference.

I was working in the living room today near my planted 29g with its Eheim 2213 canister filter. It was so bright and sunny out that with the blinds open I didn't even need to turn on the light to work.

Suddenly the tank light turned off (the light's internal fan was already off). I had just changed the 65W CFL a month and a half ago, so I checked to make sure that the plug was snug in the outlet and flipped the switch a few times...nothing. Stumped, I went to turn on the overhead light for better visibility in the stand cabinet, and that's when I discovered the power was out.

Now that's a quiet filter, lol.

lol, i really need to invest in one when i get a larger tank. i wish it was cheap enough to be worth it for smaller tanks, otherwise i'd have nothing but canisters!

I really like my wet/dry (WD) system on my 155. It sound like a fountain and I don't hear anything running. As for my 26g with the Aqua Clear HOB I actually have to check to make sure it's on and running. I never hear a peep. The lid doesn't even vibrate.

I have a Marineland C-220. These filters really should have a power indicator light. OH the sweet sound of silence.

You notice the external filter goes off because it makes a weird gulping sound. Otherwise there's no real way to notice IMHO - unless you have a high spray bar

I have two of the pengiun 200 biowheels , and they are great , have to replace the impeller , a part wasn't working and was making this horrid noise , other than that it has been great ! When the power goes out , and comes back on its ok , the water fills back up !

My 20g's in my living room, three rooms and a hallway away from my bedroom. When I had a Penguin 150 it often kept me up at night it made so much noise, from the motor not the waterfall. I now have an Eheim 2213, and once a day I put my hand on top of it to make sure it's still on - I can't tell even when I'm standing right beside it. Now THAT'S money well spent!

I have dual Aquaclears on the back of my 29 gallon and they are pretty quiet.

Years ago I had a Fluval canister on my 55 gallon and a return connection let go while I was at work and pumped the tank water onto the floor. I don't think I'll ever trust a canister again.
