Ideas for one filter for multiple betta tanks

I've tried searching for this idea in other threads but maybe I'm missing it? I was wondering if anyone has had good experience filtering multiple betta tanks with just one filter (canister, sump, or something). I'm just brainstorming and wanting to do some research and price comparison, so any and all comments and/or information is desired.

4- 5 gallon rectangular tanks, can be lined in a row or 2 up, 2 down
4- separate heaters
1- filter system for all 4 tanks
lighting to be figure after filtration decision.

I know some have divided one tank into multiples, and that is something I have been looking into also, but desire is for 4 separate.

Thanks
Dave

Hi,
I know you can filter all of them using the same filter but I wouldn't recommend it for a couple of reasons the main one being disease ..If one betta gets sick it will be spread through out all the tanks this also makes it impossible to only treat one betta at a time.
What I would recommend is sponge filters..you could get them for pretty cheap too...Just get a airpump strong enough for the four tanks and run all four sponge filters off of one airpump..It's pretty cost effective and works great and keeps them all filtered separately whether you use a divided tank or separate tanks.

Got it Great! Thanks for the rapid input Cesch, any more tornadoes/ storms down your way?

I'll add the sponges/air pump/ tubing/ valves/ stones to the list.

THX

No problem..Im' jealous. Sounds like your going to have fun with this project..I know that MissMTS did a divided tank too..She bought individual HOB filters though..I'll find the thread for ya and post it here so you can see what she did..She took a 20gallon long and divided it into 4 5 gallon tanks for her bettas.

We are getting storms right now ...Just getting ready to hit us. Tis the season..As long as we don't get any tornado's like the last 2 years we'll be good.

To keep on the brain storming would in not work if you use a large sump to filter all 4 tanks and use a UV Sterilizer to kill the disease spores in the water between tanks... Could be put on the return pump befor they split to each tank... Not sure if this will work but just an idea....Hope I could help Rob

i recently divided a 14g into multiple sections and i only run one filter. i like my method because im super limited on plug-ins, so the fewer the cords the better for me. heres a link to my thread. Finally divided my 14g Betta tank!

So I found a sweet craigslist deal: 29 gallon (little scratches inside and out), penguin 330, heater, hood w/20 watt flor. = $20.00 and only 10 min away!!!! Week later I went to LFS and came home with accessories for 2 5.5 gallons, and some d/w for the 29 = $120 after I was done. For about $160 I now have 3 new tanks currently cycling!!!

I decided to go with little box/corner filters (one home made) with a tetra air pump for the two betta tanks (cycling with piece shrimp),pics dont show, and the 330 is working like a champ,(I may use an established filter to speed cycle the 29 but maybe not??)

Layered the 29 w/ flourite and small and med gravel, I have great growth in my 10 gal, so I can plant cuttings of Red Myrio, and Ambulia, and want to get some mosses for the wood. I think this will become home for a pair of Angels, any input??

I like it, now I can watch tanks, not just tv, while I'm on the bike for 30 min, at least LOL. I'll post more as I progress.
