| Ready to buy Eheim classic canister filter, but which one?? I'm Not sure which "Eheim classic canister filter" I should buy for my 40 gal tank the 2213,2215 or 2217, between petsmart online, Drsfostersmith & BigAls, BigAls got the best price & free shipping,I want to rule out the 2213 & go for the 2215 or 2217. the 2213 would be filtering my tank 3X's & the 2217 5X's, please give me your opinions do I really need the 2217??
2213-$79.99 flat
2215-$109.99 flat
2217-$149.99 flat |

| I have a 45 gallon and the 2213, so should be fine.
The 10X rule only counts for HOB filters, given the 2213 has a 3 litre bucket of assorted filtering material (and no bypass), it can work MUCH more efficiently than a hob, so doesn't need the 10x rule. |

| I originally bought the 2215 for my 20g tank, but when I brought it home and took it out of the box...well the thing was huge, I used to keep fish in smaller containers (before I knew better ). I returned it and got the 2213 and it's working like a charm, water's pristine and no dead zones. I plan on sticking a small hob on there too, but only to keep it cycled so I can stick it on a QT tank any time, and it will circulate even more water so I won't need an airstone. There is so much media in these things that they do such an awesome job at filtration that you don't really need to worry too much about turning over your tank volume 10x/hour. I'd go with the 2213, the 2215 wouldn't hurt if you'd just feel more comfortable with a little more circulation. |

Check if it comes with double tap valves. If it doesn't, you should consider getting them (they're pretty cheap), they'll make cleaning the filter very very easy. |

Let me take a picture for you so you can recognise them - they're the grey/dark grey things
Mine came with them, and the filter media - they were in a seperate box for some reason. |

Just checked for you, the media and d.t.valves came in a box called "+Plus" , so may be a seperate product? |

| Mine came from Big Al's and had all the media already loaded into the canister, also came with the double tap valves which were in a plastic bag along with the hoses, pipes, elbow etc. In the 2213 there's a plastic pail-type thing that holds the media inside the actual canister (great for maintenance, just lift it out) which was wrapped in plastic then put in the canister. The box said something about how it included all the media, but I don't believe it mentioned the valves. Should also mention replacement Eheim media is pretty expensive; I've read the included media is pretty much infinitely reuseable except for the carbon. I bought some generic carbon sheet foam that I plan to cut to size to fit, I don't see that it will make any difference and was dirt cheap.
I used all my hose but it was more than enough. It comes as all one piece; what I did was first cut off two short pieces about 3" long and attach these to the filter (one end to the filter and the other end to a double tap valve). Then the remaining hose can be cut as needed (into two pieces, each has one end attached to the other side of the double tap valves, and another end going to the intake and output respectively). The length these need to be is dependent on where you put the canister. In my case I didn't have room inside the stand so it went on the floor beside it, so the hoses had to reach from the canister on the floor up to the top of the tank on the stand. |
