how long can bacteria live?

i was on yahoo answers and i read a question some one had about cloudy water . they stated that their filter had stopped running the night before. one answerer told the questioner that beneficial bacteria will die in a filter that is not running after only half an hour! is this true?thanks for any replies

Yahoo answers isn't a very good place to get advice, lots of people around who don't know and pretend they do.

Usually the filter bacertia won't die out so quickly, as long as the sponge is kept moist they'll live for quite a while.

Don't forget, your bio matter needs good oxygen as well. As llama said, it shouldn't die out that fast. I think it was Shawnie that had lost power for 4 days but she kept her bio matter wet and it didn't disturb the cycle at all.

if that ever happens (and i've had a few filters die on me), as long as the bacteria stays wet and can get some oxygen then you're okay, what i do is remove the filter media from the filter itself, and just stick it somewhere in the tank temporarily

I agree with everyone!! and matter of fact, in the summer when the weather is better, I mail out my media to friends starting new tanks so they can seed their tanks fast...(those that dont have TSS available )
