where to put the filter??

Just bought an Eheim Classic 2215 canister filter for my 20g! and super excited about it! except...it's a touch bigger than I thought it was going to be. It's too tall to go into the aquarium stand - the shelf is not removable and is actually part of the reason the stand stays together so I don't want to muck with that. So: the current situation is this - tank on stand about six inches from the wall, power outlet behind stand, whole setup about eight inches on right side from very large wooden shelving unit (not moving that!) On the other side of the tank is a hallway, no real wiggle room there. All power cords currently piled on the floor on the right side of tank + stand, between it and the shelving unit. What I was thinking of doing was moving all the electrics behind the stand (still on the floor) and putting the filter where the cords were, to the right of the stand + tank between them and the shelving unit. The only problem with that is the filter's on the floor, the power bar's on the floor, they're close together, should any water spill - not good. There's really no where else to put the power bar/cords unless I cut a hole in the stand and put them all inside the stand. Another thing I could do is hang the power bar from the hardware that bolts the stand to the wall (that's a long story) which would also give it the 'drip loop' it really should have to be safe but would be harder to access. Thoughts? Advice?

If you put the filter on the floor what about getting a small plastic box as wide as one of the gaps and stick one of the things in it. Or better yet do both

A 2215? For a 20 gallon tank? Isn't that a bit... too big? If I rememebr well the 2215 is for up to 90 gals or so. No such thing as TOO large, but really

The 2215 filters at 162 GPH, my HOB did 150 gph...I know canisters filter better and have tons more media, but atm the tank's a little cloudier than I'd like and as long as the fish can handle the flow rate I've always thought overfiltering is better than underfiltering.

Besides I can't seem to find the 2213 in stores

So now that you’ve got the 2213 does it fit in the stand? I always hang my power bars to ensure good drip loops.

Nope. It will likely go beside the stand, and I'm debating putting all the cords into the stand (requires making a hole in the back of the stand). Still considering.

I only said that IMO canister filters are a joy to maintain and work extremely well. I at no time suggested that they are small.

You would only need a small hole for the power cords. Maybe an inch hole, as you will need to get the 3-prong, grounded power bar cord through. But a one inch hole won’t weaken the stand at all.

Amazing the size of the thing! It's going on the floor for sure. It's hhheeeaavvvyyy too, and it doesn't even have any water in it yet!

True. Atm the stand's jam packed with lotsa other stuff (amazing how 'fishie stuff' multiplies isn't it) which I'll have to shuffle around a bit, and the doors on the stand keep sticking...may end up hanging them all behind the tank instead anyways. When I first got the whole setup I found out (too late) the floor's not QUITE level in that spot, and the whole thing leaned forward enough I was scared it was going to go over at any minute, so I got some hardware from Rona (steel door supports I believe they are, and stove bolts - at least that's what the package said ) and anchored/bolted my stand to the wall - it's not going anywhere til I says so now! and there's a few inches of steel in a convenient spot to hang stuff from back behind the tank...

OH and I should also mention that canister filters are heavier then HOB filters but lighter then 5 gallon pails.

Just be sure to hang it somewhere that if you should ever become forgetful during a water change that water can not flow onto the power bar if you overfill the aquarium.

Overfilling the aquarium? that I don't do. Pouring water beside the aquarium instead of into it? uh...well....towels are really great things to have around....

I haven’t done it yet but as I tend to get distracted I haven’t ruled out the possibility.

I’m a smoker. I have black coffee mugs, black soup bowls and black ashtrays. Well I’m sure you can figure out where this is going.
