Filter media question

I have a TopFin power filter that came with an aquarium kit. It uses carbon cartridges only (I think). I was told that it wasn't supplying enough biological filtration for the 10 gallon that I was using it for, so it was replaced with an AquaClear. I am now setting up another 10 gallon and my question is: Could I use the TopFin power filter with media from the AquaClear (biomax, for example)? Would this be a good idea/work better for the new 10 gallon set up? The TopFin filter has an indentation where the carbon cartridges are supposed to go and extra space on either side of the indentation - not a basket type thing where the media goes for the AquaClear. Does anyone know if my idea would work and please explain why/why not? (I'm a newbie, so go easy on me.)

Moving media from the Aquaclear to the topfin will help cycle the new tank faster.
You could always put biomax behind the filter cartridge to supply extra filter media. More room for beneficial bacteria to grow.

Should I put a foam insert in there as well?

Yes you can cut sponge, filter floss, whatever as long as you don't over do it. I don't use filter cartridges, I adapt those like yours (e.g. Jebo, Resun) with AquaClear media.

The reason I suggest don't over do it, is because it happened twice to me (with Resun HOB filters) that I placed too much sponge media and the water ended up spilling outside.
