Sponge Filter Guard ?

Are sponge filter guards closed on the bottom ? Do they come in green ? Does one size fit all standard HOB filters ?
Do they put a strain on the filter motor ? Do they impede water flow ?

Glad you asked. I have more questions to add.

Where do you get them? Do they install easily?

I do believe you mean the cylindrical/conical Sponge filter media that has a hollow in the middle that doesn't go through the whole sponge. Yes they are closed in one side. This seem to me as a good idea in order to protect small or sick fish, or preventing certain inverts (e.g. apple snails), so they don't get trapped/sucked in the submersible intake tube of a HOB filter, or a powerhead without pre-filter.

I don't have those available locally. I had to replace a "killer" filter (AquaClear 70) that I kept as back up in a 45gal tank, with a smaller unit (Jebo 505), since it trapped several apple snails, neons, and fish recovering from ick. If I had those at hand I might still be running the AquaClear 70 there.

Make sure you have that question answered before you purchase on-line since open ended cylindrical sponges are sold for other use (e.g. the pre-filter sponge at the box that rests outside the tank in an overflow unit of a Wet/Dry sump).

First of all I want to say I have always found you posts to be clear and insightful. I feel lucky to have you to advise me.

I want to buy a AquaClear Powerfilters 50 (200) HOB for my 55 gallon Amazon tank. I want to put a "pre-filter" on the intake tube. Which of these is the correct type
