Mini-Canister?

I'm looking into a mini-canister for a 20 gallon tank and i was wondering if anyone here had success with one? I'm a little concerned because i can't find anything by a familiar brand...so far this is the only one i've seen...

Anyone using this? Recommendations for other ones?

Thanks

This is a ToM Mini-Canister. I guess you get what you pay for with it. It is handy, silent, but I am not sure about its useful life. I got one out of curiosity. I had to "jump start" by the old mouth-siphon method.

I'm using one as back up filtration for my 29g bow tank, where I have DIY CO2 and a dual sponge filter as the main unit. I used it first in my betta Sorority project (when they were packed in a 10gal). I read mixed reviews about it. The actual flow in GPH might be lower than stated, nevertheless, I had to use some plastic hose adaptations to interconect the in-let and out-put plastic flexible hoses. Easy to maintain. Easy to get a hose detached and get a water spill as well (I had one already).

As far as filtration, it seems to do the work, as my readings suggest but I haven't used this unit as the sole filtration system though.

Please check this review article, with detailed pics, it was helpful for me:

hmm, yeah i'm a little concerned having it as my only method of filtration. it's probably going to be used for an axolotl tank (in a 20), so i'm not entirely concerned about the GPH because the tank will only be 6 inches full or so. i can't afford a large water spill either....i live in a dorm and that would be really, really bad

i'll have to consider this some more, luckily i have a little while to think about it

if there's only six inches of water in a 20 gal tank.... I've got a box filter that I picked up rated for 15 gals... would that sort of thing work better maybe? A canister seems a bit over kill.

yeah, i was just concerned about the water flow, i want it to be as still as possible but still get really good filtration. hmm, what's the brand on the box filter? i've heard of them but never knew anyone that used them

It's a Petcetera brand which I don't think you have in the states but there's got to be an equilvalent. It's called a Roka Boy (s) and it's just run by an air pump. I can see if I've got a pic of it if you'd like.

Found a few pics. (It's in the background but I don't usually take shots of my filters )

I think that it works great. Since it's in a 3 gal tank I had to put a valve on the air line to slow it down a bit but it's one of my favorites.

p.s. I edited the pics on the first one.

no problem. I hope it works for you. sorry I don't have any better shots of it for you.

Note: I might have the wrong name for it. In really tiny print on the box it says "AIR-LIFT style submersible filter".
... I still think that it's a box filter...
