Cutting your own filter?

I have an Eclipse 37 Gallon System (marineland), and well, I did not enjoy trying to cut out the carbon AT ALL. Go figure. So I think I want to try to cut my own filter to put in there, since they do not make a carbon-less filter. What is the best kind to get? I went to one of my LFS's yesterday, and there are so many options! I didn't ask anyone, as it was Sunday, and they were way too busy. I want to try putting it on top (or bottom) of the one I have and phase out the crummy one. Has anyone done this before? Any advice would be great!!

Hi Missi
IMO I would try the Aqua Clear Sponges. They are easy to cut to size and you can stuff them just about anywhere in all types of filters. You can also buy Filter floss which acts the same way.

Thank you! I will look for those. Do you know if Petsmart has them? That is closest to me, but there is a local store on my way home from work.

You have Jack Dempsey's? I was looking at those yesterday... I want one! They aren't good with smaller fish though (guppies/platies), right? I may have to get a Cichlid tank one day!

i'm somewhere around 95% sure that petsmart has the aquaclear sponges, i think that's where i bought my aquaclear filter, but i could be thinking of the biobag made for whispers. if they dont, the biobags work really well for me, they arent connected on all four sides, it's open on top so you can very easily pour the carbon out into a plastic bag.

I got mine at Petsmart. They come in different sizes so find a box that is closest in size to your tank filter or find a larger size that you can cut in two and safe some filter media this way.
No the JDs are not good with guppies and platy Im afraid... sorry.

I ended up getting some Aquaclear sponges. Two of them ended up being the exact size for my one filter, so when I ever need to change them, I can just do half at a time. Woo hoo! That works right?
