Customer review giving me second thoughts. (Fluval)

I went out and bought a Fluval 305. It looks like a great filter and I'm pretty excited to get it up and running.

I'm having one major concern though. I was reading reviews and I came across the "the seal broke and flooded my room" people. To me this was like being told I could get life saving surgery then finding out the doctor only has one eye! Now on the other hand, if this doesn't happen I'll have a great filter. It easily triples all aspects (chem/bio/mech) of my current filter as well as increasing GPH.

Is this really something to be concerned about? I have a small room and I have to say if this happened, it would be pretty catastrophic.

Arg, why did I have to read those reviews!

Now I have a question . . . How many people said that? And, if you have a massive tank, just don't keep anything very important to you in the room it goes in. I'm not sure if this helps, but I hope it does, acidpope.

99.99% of all people go home and have absolutely no problems so they don't feel very inclined to write a review. the other .001% have a problem and go straight to writing a bad review...even if the defect was caused by user error.

and those .001% of all users who write bad reviews make up 99% of all reviews. Read online reviews with a grain of salt...and double check your seal.

i have three fluvals 2 305 and 405 all are great, wouldnt trade them in for the world, ive heard more problems with the 04 series, but i would head to the store and get an extra seal just in case, and when they start to feel like they are drying out just change it to avoid coming home to a lake.

Those kind of mishaps can happen with Any mechanical Equipments but UNLIKELY. Even brand new car can have problems right out of Dealer. As Mike have said, having extra O-ring is a excellent idea.

I figured as much. I just thought I'd get some feedback from people who weren't anonymous. There was like 2 reviews that said they had the leak problem, and it's most likely no coincidence that both were on the same site (the person prolly logged in under a different name to write up more than one bad review). The other sites didn't have this problem mentioned in their review sections for the product. It did sound like it was more attributable to user error since seal and gasket problems generally stem from people not checking them during maintenance.

I do this with most purchases, from cars to tv's to filters. I always look too hard for problems and when I find them I tend to see it more as the standard and not the exception. Then I get it anyway and have no problems.

I appreciate the feedback.
