over filtering

Ok so I am new to keeping fish. I am taking my time on deciding what type of fish to get. I do like the banjo catfish but not 100% on what I am getting. The real question, Is it possible to over filter your fish tank. I am using a 29 gal but the filters i have are good for 20 gal or 75 gal. I know with turtles they require 2-3 times filtration. So can I use the filter that is good for 75 gallon.

If you can figure out how many gallons per hour the filter pumps, that will help you know...
I don't know if you can overfilter, unless it makes the current too strong for your fish (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
I'd say 5-10x your amount is good. So, 375-750GPH.

over filtering cannot hurt, but the current made by the larger filter may affect your fish. some fish like slower water currents, some like faster currents. i have a 29gal also, and I have two filters, one for a 20gal and one for a 50gal. mine have adjustable flow valves that allow me to turn the intake power down a lil to keep the current from getting too fast.

I'd say use the 75, its better to over filter than under filter, unless your planning to under stock as well. You could put it on a low setting, as URFisher35 said, so the flow doesn't upset your fish.

EDIT: Heres a link for banjo catfish: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog...?species_id=25

I would use... both at the same time. I just don't see any disadvantage in using both. As a rule of thumb, most of my tanks -exception with smaller male betta tanks, and not all of them- have at least two filters.

The only risk involved is... you might feel tempted to set another tank for that other filter once its fully seeded.... but other than that, unless the fish you keep require low current or stagnant water -for the latter sponge filters are usually best, as long as you manage to keep some calm spots I figure it's safe.

As a major guideline: overfiltration is impossible to achieve.
