Filter decided to stop working on me

I recently bought a new 5 gallon hex for one of my betta girls (strange to call her a "girl" when she's bigger than both the boys) and it came with a whisper filter. I got the tank set up, live plants, driftwood, a large chunk of filter media from another tank, let it run for a few days, tested, and ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate around 5. Anyways, the other day it just stopped working for no apparent reason. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, different plugs, taking it apart (which yielded nothing, they don't really come apart). And ultimately just couldn't get it to work. Luckily, I had a sponge filter lying around, so I went ahead and put it in the tank, as my betta had a small amount of finrot and I was medicating the tank. I wanted there to at least be some filtration. So, I have a few questions...

1. Since I only have the sponge filter in there, is there any way for me to save my cycle or do I just need to purchase a new one ASAP and put the old filter media in it?

2. What filters would people recommend for a 5G hex?

you can put the seeded media in a knee high stocking and put it in the tank until thh sponge filter cycles. I would say maybe just get a corner filter for it, itd too small for a power filter and too big for aa pen plax small world filter, hope this helps!

Some one gave me a 5g hex with a broken filter. I bought an HOB and my husband modified (Read used a hack saw LOL) to acomodate it.

Lol lucy, a hack saw! that may work too, a palm filter may work for it.

haha, thanks for the suggestions everyone. going to look for filters today. I'm probably going to see if i can find a HOB with an adjustable flow or something, but shes very strong and could probably deal with the increased water flow.
