Do I need another filter also?

Hey, I got a 120 gallon tank and ordered the Rena XP4 canister filter, would you guys and girls advise buying maybe a HOB filter also? I ordered a Aqua Clear 110, then found out, I don't have room for it in the back. You think it would be ok to put the Aqua Clear on the side or return it for another canister filter? Thanks for the help as always!!

Hi FishJones
it looks like you have one of the best canister filters there is. It is rated for up to 265 gal tanks so I would think you would have enough filtration for your tank.

g'morning fishjones
I did some more research on the xp4 and found that some folks are having problems with the amount of water flow. Some folks that have it say that the xp3 seems to have done a better job. It seems that it does get clogged quickly and with most canisters you will need to clean it out, probably at least twice a week compared to HOB filters. Since the xp4 is rated for up to aquariums of 265g which is more than double the size of your 120 and with a flow rate of 450 GPH it would seem that the one filter would be enough for your sized tank.Just my opinion on what I have researched since I do not use the rena xp's I cannot reference from my own experience with it.
From what I have read tho, it does seem like top of the line in the way of canister filters .

Hey Kate, I appreciate it so much you helping me. Great, I'll just stick to one and if not good enough, get one off E-bay. It was funny, bought a XP4 at Petsmart for $290 with tax, and then bought one brand new off E-bay for $165 shipped, lol took the Petsmart one back for sure!!

Is amazing the different prices for things online. I saw a big price jump on this item while I was researching it online. The 165 price is what I saw at one site... so thats a great deal for sure! I agree with a 'wait and see' how this one works for your tank and if needed purchase another filter.
Best of luck!

Yeah Kate, it's AMAZING the price difference sometimes between real world and online. I was so glad to see cheaper on E-bay. I tell you another good place to buy fish stuff is Amazon.com, they have awesome deals a lot of times on all types of stuff!!
