acquired a whisper filter, cleaning it?

Hi everyone, I have acquired a very dirty whisper 40 power filter from a teacher at school who tore down a very neglected tank. the thing is absolutely disgusting, so I have a few questions about cleaning it. #1, what should I clean it with?, there is lots of algae growing in it(I know not to use soap). secondly, since you can't buy a refill cartridge for the "aerobic bacteria grid" should I wash it really well? I don't believe that there were any diseased fish in the tank. and thirdly does anyone know the GPH for this model (Power filter 40)? thanks again! -fishlover78

P.S. just as a random question, is there any know GPH for a lee's economy corner filter? I wanted to know if you were slightly under ther 10 GPH you could throw a few corner filters in the tank to bring the GPH up. thanks again! -fishlover78

I had a whisper filter with a tank I got for free. I just used water and a scrubber and went at it..Mine is the kind that's goes in the tank, doesn't hang on the back. Just water seemed to work fine.

I had a biowheel that came with the 30 hex I got and it was nasty..I was advised just to give the wheel a good rinsing. I might be wrong but that's what I ended up doing.

thanks CHoffman, this cesspool of a filter is disgusting at the moment, there is all kinds of algae and slum growing in it. I have had it running in a plastic bin full of water, its a outside HOB filter, you got a whisper in tank filter. thanks. does anyone have any suggestions on saving the "aerobic bacteria grid"? I can't seem to find a replace anywhere, and how bout the corner filter GPH question? thanks CHoffman! -fishlover78

if your aerobic bacteria grid is anything like the one i have on my filter, you can just buy a large sheet of the material (usually in the sponge section), cut it down to size, and use that. it's also cheaper to go that way, although the aerobic bacteria grid doesn't usually need much more than a rinse to clean.

210 GPH for Whisper 40. clean it and use hot boiling water to sterilize then use it.
