biowheels?

was wondering what everyone's thoughts on biowheels are? i have a 28gal odyssea (?) tank that came with what i guess is a filtration system tailored for it. it draws up the water into a long tube with multiple holes that trickles the filtered water over the carbon/filter media and then that flows on out back into the tank. i've used biowheels in the past and they seemed to work great before, but i'm in no rush to spend more money if a non-biowheel system is just as effective. thanks!

Bio-wheels are solely for growing the bacteria for the nitrogen cycle. They don't do anything else. A regular filter based system is just as good as long as you're not constantly throwing away the filter media (where the bacteria grows). The bio-wheels are supposed to grow the bacteria and the bacteria stays on the wheel,so you can change the filter media without harming the bacteria colony.(and get you to buy more filters that you don't need). I would just wash off the old filter media and re-use it over and over again. It's a nice pitch to get customers to buy it,but is useless and unnecessary in my opinion.

I honestly had a bad experience with them, you know the more complicated your setup is the more that can go wrong, biowheels cease to turn, fluidized bed filter eject their sand, the bio wheel filter I had ceased to turn i a week, I then went back to my good ol' aquaclear!
