Sponge filters

I've got a couple home-made sponge filters and was wondering if anyone knew of a way to make sure that they're working properly?

I can't find the site that had the easiest explination to it but basically you get a piece of filter sponge, cut a hole in it (not all the way through) put an airstone in that then turn it on.

well it may sound stupid but throw it in a running tank, sprinkle a little flake food in the tank and if it gets sucked up by the sponge its working? I dunno (as you can already tell!)

lol no problem.
They're already in tanks however with only a betta in each it's hard to say if they're doing they're job or not since there's not really a whole lot for them to have to clean.

The easiest way to tell if they're working is to do ammonia/nitrite tests frequently for the first couple of months. If you've got no ammonia and no nitrites, they're working.
