Pads, Sponges, Floss?!Hun?

Ok, I'm reading and reading about all the options for filter cartridges/bag and what to do with them. () I have a few questions.

1) What is the difference between Floss vs. sponges vs. a pad?

I keep seeing this the Uncut Blue Bonded Filter Pad (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...31&c=3578+4150 ) come up on the forums as you can just cut it and use it to replace your cartridges/bags. So here is my question ...

2) I have a Hex 5g that currently takes the Eclipse Z cartridges, so to replace this do i just cut a square and stick it where the little plastic and carbon cartridge went?

3) I also have a Tetra Whisper Filter for a 30 gallon that now has a bio-bag where you pour the carbon in the bag. So do I just replace this whole contraption with a square of the Filter Pad?

4) and where do floss and sponges come in? I'm not even going to ask about the little plastic balls I keep seeing as well! LOL

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH. You all pretty much rock!

Hi nolancl
You only get one use from filter floss and then it needs replacing . Sponges and pads are the same thing ( as far as I know ) and when they start to block up you can rinse them off ( in tank water ) and re-use them .
Your right , all you need to do is cut the pad to fit where the manufacturers element would go .
The little plastic balls give more surface area for bacteria to grow to help biological filtration .
Hope this helps

1) The sponges are usually coarse, which never get replaced.
In 2 of my filters, they're in front of the filter catridge.

2) Yes

3) You can, yes.

I love numbered questions. lol

Haha, you guys are amazing.
I am going to return that uber expensive unopened pack of cartridges and just get some of the pads.

Weeeee, this means I have more money for fishy stuff!

THANK YOU!

You can also cut a peice and leave it in your established tank in case you need to set up a quick quarantine tank or seed a new one.

i personally like the floss better - i think it traps stuff better and is cheaper. i use more of the tetra type HOB filters, so it's really easy to just cut a long strip of the floss and then portion off what i need per filter, then it's just wrap and go since i don't use carbon. you can also rinse out the floss in tank water instead of replacing it.

but really, i think it comes down to what you prefer
