Help me with my filter

My filter lost pretty much all suction so therefore it basically no longer works. Any ideas on what to do? It is a eclipse 12 gallon filter that come with the tank. If not I will have to get a new filter today.

Get a bucket out and pull the filter apart (the bucket is to catch the water and garbage that will come out of the filter). Take a bottle brush (if you have one) and use it to scrub out the algae and gunk that has built up. Clean off the impeller, and check to make sure none of the filter media is too seriously gummed up.
Try running it.

If that doesn't work, try this:
Do you feel the filter humming when you touch it? If so, that means that the motor is spinning but the impeller isn't picking up the movement (or something to that effect, I think). You may want to try replacing the impeller before buying a whole new filter.

Alrighty then.
One thing I forgot to ask. The filter isn't making a ton of noise, is it? If it is, the impeller is likely still spinning, but it's not sucking water up for some reason.
You should be able to find a replacement impeller pretty easily.

Is it a pretty heavy rattling noise? My Marineland filter used to do that sometimes. What I'd have to do is prime it (take a cup of tankwater and pour it into the filter tank) to get it running again. A couple of times I had to kind of jiggle things around to get everything in place. Once I did that, and primed the filter, it would start running again.

You're sure you've got the motor fully attached to the housing?

If so, my next step would be to buy a new impeller and try that out. If that doesn't work, I can't think of anything else.
