the not so Old Man

I'm having a reasonable debate with my wife as to how often to change the foam, carbon filter, and biological filter inserts. on a aquaclear 110 filter
in a 29 gallon tank with about 12 small fish and 1 large pleco. I know the price is pretty low for the replacements but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere

I'm from the old school ( clean them and just change the water )
She's from the New ( replace every cleaning)

If she's right I eat crow

Replace the foam and bio inserts only when it's falling apart. That's where the nitrifying bacteria live int he tank.
The carbon, if you choose to use carbon, should be replaced as per the package's instructions.
Water should be replaced in large enough quantities to keep nitrates under 20ppm.

This is "new school" information, in that it is based on the most current information we've got in how an aquarium works.

welcome to fishlore!!
I never replace the filter media..(white spongy stuff) and only rinse in used tank water with cleanings..as far as carbon, the only tanks I run it in are my overstocked tanks and that gets changed out every 3 weeks(just the carbon not the filter media)

so I think you safe to eat chicken tonite
