Aqua-tech filters....

.... anyone have anything to say about them? I'm looking at a 5 gal hex on kijiji right now and they say that they just bought it from wally, had if for a week and are selling it. I'd be tempted to take it off their hands but I'm not sure if the filter is something that I should be concerned about or not.
Thanks,

Hi, What type? I have a aqua-tech filter, its I think the 5-15 one. I've had it almost 4 years and its been a good filter. I had originally gotten it because I had breed bettas and needed a small filter to raise the fry (although I had to make adjustments etc to make it safe for them) and after they grew up, I kept it and still use it for one of my 10 gallons. I can't say I know if the one they are selling is in good shape or not, but I know I've liked the one I have and its a aqua-tech!!!!

Many of the tank kits sold at WalMart have the AquaTech filters. I bought a 29g kit many years ago and the filter is still going. There are many better filters(aqua Clear is my favorite) but aquatech is not a bad filter.

I have a 29 gallon kit I got from wally world and it has a aqua tech filter with it. I didn't care for it to much so I added it as additional filtration to my 36 gal tank and bought a aqua clear 70 for the 29. I love aqua clear filters . I also have to 5 gallon hex tanks from walmart and the filter on them is a small one integrated into the hood. They do an ok job. I have one as a betta tank and the other as a quarentine tank with 6 small harlequin rasboras in it at the moment. ( new fish not sick fish..lol) They are good for betta as they don't kick up a lot of current but I don't see they would be able to keep up with a big job ( but then the tank is only 5 gallons to).

In the hob aqua tech that came with my 29 gallon tank I stuffed it full of floss and bits and peices of sponges and stuff...lol It is used in my 36 along with a aqueon filter that I am also not the biggest fan of but the 2 together doa decent job and all the bits I keep in them add addtional filtration as well as lots of bacteria to use in other new tanks or in QT tank ...if I am having a prob in another tank etc.

I was thinking of doing something like that as well. I'm trying to get rid of all the crattrige filters. I don't mind having to replace something every 3 months but a new part of the filter every month is a pain.

I also want to get rid of the cartridges and just get sponges to add to the filter housing, I have already done that in one of my 5 gallon hex tanks and have enough sponge to do it in the other 5 gallon at least. I don't want to yet as I have a school of 6 small harlequin rasboras in qt in there . I just got them over the weekend and wanted the filter undisturbed to make sure the water is pristine in there for them.

I've heard that nylon pot scrubbers can work well. I think I might try that out, as part of the filter at least.

Aqua-Tech Filters

Aqua-Tech filters are primarily used to clean the fish tank's water. By cycling the liquid through the device toxic components are removed and particles are captured.

External filters
are used on very large aquariums. There are both canister filters and sump varieties to choose from. These will generally be the most effective form of aquarium filtration because of the vast surface area where bacteria can process water. On the downside they are always the most costly.
