the nasty carbon....

Ok. so I read all about no one using carbon in there hob filters because its bad etc... But do you apply the same philosophy for the cannister tank filters like the fluval or ehiem. I'm about to get one, never owned this type, and I see it has the blue foam pad in it, carbon, and some holy rock looking things. I'm guessing that the blue foam pad u can still take out once in a great while to swish it in tank water, also I assume those rock things stay in there more or less forever? Should I just leave out the carbon all together?

thanks

each person has their own preference...carbon does release whatever it has filtered out back into the tank after a period of time..everyone has a different opinion as to how long..ive seen 48 hours to 4 months and anything in between LOL

I use carbon in my overstocked tanks but I change it out every two weeks...in my tanks it seems to help with the ammonia (as well as daily water changes) and waste issues...but in my other tanks, I keep the carbon out ....
