I have a freshwater planted tank so I use hot filters only with low surface agitation, I noticed after adding an iron supplement for the plants that the next day I had an "oily" film on the surface, some websites I checked said this was normal with iron supplements iin planted tanks and that a surface skimmer attachment on the hot filters intakes shoud clear it up..... anyone have any experience or reccomendations with this??

normaly surface skimers are used in saltwater tanks, do you have a air pump,

no I dont use an air pump, its not good for the live plants which need the co2 from low circulation and the plants produce excess oxygen anyway. what I was referring to isnt a protein skimmer like saltwater, its an attachment that goes over the intake pipe on a hang on tank filter and lets water from the surface flow down into it and through the filter itself
