I want to upgrade to a Bio-Wheel filter...

I currently have a Whisper filter and want to switch to a Bio-Wheel type filter.

How can I make this transition without disrupting my cycled tank and keep the beneficial bacteria active??

Is it just a matter of transferring the filter media from what I have now to the new Bio-Wheel filter?.....I'd like some input on this.

Also, my tank is a 30 gallon with a few African Cichlids. Is it a better idea to go with a larger filter for these fish?.....Say instead of a filter for a 30 gallon tank use one that can handle up to 50 gallons?

Any help would be appreciated......

save all your filter media and put that in the bio wheel, then slowly add your bio wheel filter.

I dont know how africans handle currant, so I'll wait for someone else to answer that question.

And...

With africans, the bigger the filter, the better. If you have a powerhead make sure the current flows at the middle, with my expierence on cichlids they love hanging out on the bottom but also feed on the top.
In my opinion i would go with a biowheel designed for a 50 or even a 75 gallon.

I like to have at least 10 GPH per gallon of filtration.

You could run both filters for a week or move the filter media over to the new filter. Either way should work.
