Is it overkill?

I was thinking about using two penguin 350B's on my 55g, but wasn't sure if this would be overkill or not. I've also heard that a fluidized bed filter is the way to go, but not sure how they work or how to hook them up. Thanks for any help.

IMO you can never have too much filtration

i believe there are two things you dont want to skimp on the heater for one. if that fails the whole tank can die. and two the filter you can never have to clean of water. i say go for it.

As long as the fish in the tank are happy, the more filtration, the better I think.

Unless you have a betta...Unless unless there are plants keeping the water flow at a minimum. Or unless unless the filter has a dial to control the flow so it is not too strong.

For a month I had a Aquaclear 70, an Eheim Liberty 150 and a Ragent something or other...on a 10 :P Fish were fine, I wouldn't worry about it

And here I woulda thought that was overkill konaboy, lol. I figure you guys can't be wrong, you've been at this a lot longer than my measly 1.5 yrs.

I have 1 penguin 350 on a 20 gallon,so I don't think that 2 would be too much at all for a 55.What I have always heard, and what I do with my tanks is always overfilter.Just don't create so much water movement that there are whirlpools,or that the fish are constantly swiming against the current. As far as the bed filter, sorry, but I do not now anything about them.

Where do filter manufacturers come up with ratings then? the 350 is supposed to rate up to a 75g, but if you use it on a 20g, it seems like the ratings are B.S. I guess i'll just follow the advice posted and go with a pair of them, too bad noone knows about the fluidized filter, maybe ill try and post on the equipment boards and see what turns up. thanks again for the input

i agree. you can never have too much filtration. i have a penguin 150 and 200 on my 20g tank. that is 350 gph which means that my tank cycles through 17.5 times per hour. but my fish love it and i have never had problems with the water being dirty lol

I'm not sure where they get their ratings from either. I ignore it and just look at the gph.

When the new filter arrives (just waiting on FedEx, the 4th kept them from delivering it yesterday) I'll have 700gph on the 55g, from what you guys say I think that sounds just about perfect

Yea, 700 gph will be very good for a 55g tank.
