there are variuos recomendations about how often the water in a tank should be turned over/filtered on an hourly basis as i am sure you have read. Obviuosly the more filtration, the better the water quality, and the less you have to do as far as water changes(frequency and amount) IMO, which is better for the fish. Again it depends on stocking, and the type of fish. The aquaclear is rated at 500gph and i usually subtract 10% of the gph for filter media, etc., so 2 aquaclears should be 900gph approx. and that will give you roughly 6x. If you have a lightly stocked tank i would think that it would be sufficient. First determine the capacity of the aqaurium: lengthxdepth = xxxin2 and then factor in 48in2 per inch of body length - this gives you a rough approximation of total marine tropical fish length. Rough idea because larger fish need room to swim versus many smaller fish as a rough guide, and the bioload of the type of fish(s). Start out with a minimal number of fish and test your water, as you/if you add fish, then check your water parameters - but i would not exceed the capacity of the aquarium. Also when calculating your capacity, base it upon the full growth of whatever fish your stocking your aquarium with.
