Quiet filters? Easy to maintain?

I've got a 10 gallon with a Whisper 5-15 HOB filter. It's fairly quiet and easy to maintain.

I've just recieved a 33 gallon with a used Aquaclear 70 HOB. The 70 is VERY noisy. It grumbles loudly. I can't say if it's just worn out, defective, or just normally loud. It's currently on the 10 gallon so I can load the media with bacteria to shorten the cycle when the 33 gallon is set up.

Finally, I also have a 137 gallon tank that I will eventually be setting up. It will be viewable from both sides, meaning any filters/plumbing will be located at the ends of the tank. I'm trying to decide what to do for filtering. In order of importance I'd want a quiet filter, one that is easy to maintain, isn't too expensive.

Suggestions? Comments?

With a tank that big, my vote goes to canister. Ive never had a canister filter but from what I heard they fit you requirements and they work through everything.

Hi Calab
I have a Aqua Clear 70 and mine is very quiet. I wonder if you have a malfunctioning one?
I agree about the canister filters. They do not make any noise and you can hide them behind plants as well.

I too would jump to a canister on a tank of that size. I'm wondering about your Aquaclear because currently I have..3..in my house and they are all really quiet. Maybe something's wrong with yours?

A used aquaclear 110 game with the tank I got but I ended up having to throw it out due to the noise. I had an aquaclear 50 and new for a fact they shouldn't be making that much noise. The only noise I get from the new one is from the filter output but thats because I keep the water level a little low to leave room for floating decorations.

You might want to see if you can take it apart and put it back together, something might of just gotten loose but aquaclears are usually very quiet from my experiance.

This is what I'm starting to think as well. One thing I did notice is that it is quieter with the cover off, but it's not the cover rattling.

I plan on disassembling it when I have a chance. It was used and I really don't know what kind of condition the impeller is in.

Thanks all!
