Here (Click on the picture to enlarge it.)
The idea is for the air to flow into the sponges and escape through the sponges as bubbles. It filters and aerates the water at once. Very good for breeder tanks .

I app

I really appreciate you trying to help but I still do not understand how to do it. if you were pointing to the little plastic tube that looks like you would connect an airline tube to it I've already tried that and it won't fit. and even if it did fit it would just send the bubbles right up through the big nozzle.

Yea, on those sponge filters there is a thinner rigid tube that you connect the air line to. It's not always easy to connect and you may have to cut a tiny slit in the air line to get it over the rigid tube, but that's where the air line connects.

If it's easier, you can pull that thin tube up and off the filter to attach the air line to, then slide it back on.

Or maybe the circumference of your airline tubing is too large or too small for that plastic air-intake tube, and that's why it doesn't fit. No idea ... but unless I'm very mistaken, this is where the airline tubing should be connected to the filter.
