Connecting two tanks for larger water mass?

We're looking at upgrading from a 5gal to 20gal tank, and plan to keep the 5gal for a Betta and a couple algae eaters. My question is would it be a good thing to use some sort of external power filter and 'Y' the lines to both tanks? I would think this would essentially provide one larger volume of water as far as doing water changes, and a bigger volume like this would tend to be more chemically stable, along with having half the filters to change.

I've debated this same idea, but I haven't tried it. I'll be curious to see if it works.
