A colleague of mine no longer keeps fish, but has transitioned to frogs. Not sure of the genus/species, but they are freshwater and require a sandy substrate.

He's got a regular HOB filter which keeps getting clogged with sand.

Do the filtration experts here have any suggestions/advice (other than intake tube placement) for this?

Perhaps a recommendation of types/brands of freshwater filters that do well in sandy environs?

Hi shooter
Placing a sponge filter over the intake would stop sand getting in and reduce the chance of damaging the filter pump. But you would still have to rinse this off as it becomes clogged up with sand.

that's what i do, and it helps. if you get the wider pore stuff, you can increase amount of time in between rinsings
