filter questions

I just bought a 100 gallon tank and it came with a whisper 400 hob filter and a magnum 330 canister filter. I don't know anything about canister type filters. Right now I only have the 'over the rim' connection for the tubes, should I get extension tubes to get closer to the bottom of the tank? How about shut off valves? Should the tubes be spaced apart away from each other? Should I use both types of filters? I am new at aquariums and will be happy to get your thoughts. So far, I have a 29 gallon with a Cascade 300 power filter and 4 platy fish.

i would absolutely use both filters. there's no such thing as too much filtration.

i would put the intake tube for the canister in the back right corner of the tank. with the outlet bar from the middle of the tank horizontally to the right. i would position the HOB filter on the far left side of the tank. putting the intakes close to the gravel is good, imo too. the reason i would set up like this is because if you think about the current of the water, the output bars/section are all on the left, and will create a sort of horizontal 'cyclone' shaped current pushing debris and water to the right.

i've not looked at the magnum 330, but i would be very surprised if it didn't have shut off valves on both tubes. they may be on the canister itself?

Thanks for the input. I think I need to buy this 'bar' you talk about. I just have two hook shaped tubes that fit over the lip of the aquarium. Thanks again
