Broken Filter!!

I have a penguin biowheel 150 filter in my 20gal tank. Recently the filter stopped working completely, there had been no sign of it wearing down over time. I took out the impeller and cleaned it and cleaned the area where it fits into the motor of the filter. There is no hope in getting this working.

I have ordered a new impeller since i believe the problem to be a weak magnet on the impeller. In the mean time, my tank is very cloudy and i'm concerned about the health of my fish. Is there anything i can do in while the new impeller is in the mail to clean the tank, or should i move the fish to something else? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you for your time.

Hi dave...change at least 50% water a day and treat it with prime if you have chlorine etc in it...make sure the temp is the same as your tank water.....hope it comes in soon!!

Did you let the filter media dry out?? If so, you mite have to deal with a mini cycle on your tank

Since ythe bacteria to keep your tank cycled is in the filter, if it were me I'd buy another filter....if your guess about the "weak impeller" is not correct, a new filter would be necessary and you could lose your entire tank. Move your old filter media over to the new filter, and work on getting the old one running...it could then be a backup, or run two filters.

I'd keep the filter media wet for sure, add or increase the aeration in the tank and be doing massive daily water changes of 50-70%.. or stick another filter on the tank. Then you'd have a spare. But they really need clean water asap.

thanks guys, i found an old filter and put it on the tank for the time being, it appears to have cleaned the water up really fast and the fish seem to be doing well. Thanks again.
