Too Much Filtration??

I have a 55 gallon aquarium. Right now I have a filter on there that says it is good for 50-60 gallon aquariums. Im about to purchase an Emperor 400 filter that is good for 400gph.

Can you have too much filtration? If so, how do I know if I have too much?

I have yet to see anything that says too much is bad unless there is something specifically that needs what is being removed to live. I think there is such a thing as overkill, but too much isn't bad.

I have a 46Gal tank with a Canister filter rated upto 75Gal and a TetraTec PF300 rated up to 60Gal. overkill? maybe..

Some of the more experienced members will be able to tell you more though. I would look at how "dirty" your fish are and get filtration according to that, but if your not worried about spending more then you need to, go for it. Good Luck and hope my 2cents worth was well... worth it.

I don't think that is over kill.. but you are talking to someone w/ a 55g tank w/ a penguin for a 75g and a eheim for a 60g, then for my 36g tank a eheim for a 35g and a penguin for a 55g tank... then the penguin for a 20g on my 5 and 10g tanks...

See now we definately think alike, haha.

I just found out what filter I have now. Its a whisper 60 power filter, that hangs off the back of the tank. Good up to a 60 gallon tank, and it pumps 330gph.

Im going to order a Emperor 400 filter tonight. That pumps 400gph. So all together I will have 730gph being pumped through filtering. That is 180gph more than what I need, but I dont think that is too much.

What do you think?

You should be looking at 4 x the tank volume per hour min, but remember that the flow rate from a filter is reduced by tubing, head height, type of filter media that is used.
IMO If you have a 50g tank, dont get a 200gph filter.. go for the next size up, the more you filter your water the better.... just remember to clean them
