Is there a problem with strong current?

Hello. This is my first post on this forum and I am glad to have found this place. I have a situation with a filter my local pet shop owner has recommended. The filter is a Marineland Penguin Bio-filter (two wheels) and seems to "push" my fish around. There doesn't seem to be a spot in the tank where the fish aren't swimming but going nowhere. I hope that makes sense. My fish are relatively small 1-2 inches in length. My tank, by the way, is a 30 gallon and is 12" tall. Should I have gotten a filter with only one Bio-wheel and would one be enough for a tank that will eventually have approximately 20-25 small fish in it?

WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

Rosie barbs? Your fish should be ok with a fair amount of current. I don't think it is too much filtration, but if you want to change filters an aquaclear 70 should be right for your tank. It processes 300 gallons per hour which is the recommended turnover for a 30 gallon tank. 30 X 10 is what is recommended for HOB filters.

Aquaclear also have lots of space for biological filter media, which I like.

I run 2 penguin 350's on my 55G and they run great, quiet and they do push quite a bit of water. The penguin350's are rated for 70 gallon tanks and 350 GPH so I'm 150GPH above recommended, the aquaclear has an adjustment to turn down the flow, I went with mareinland because the AQ I bought for my wifes 10G tank was a bit noisy out of the box I thought.

Thanks to all

Thanks to each of you for the input. It sounds as if the filter shouldn't be way too much for my tank. I guess I just look at those fish and feel they are working too hard to just stay in one place. Maybe this is normal

Welcome to Fishlore. :th

Where is the filter located? Can you move it? That might create more of a 'quiet spot'.

filter location, etc.

The filter is loooonnnng and would fit basically in the center of the tank. I have moved it as much to one side as possible. There are four slots for filters and I have read that using those two extra slots by inserting a filter would slow the current down, so I am contemplating that manuever.

I have 4 in each myself but will be looking for a non-carbon filter cartridge since replacing these every 3-4 weeks gets expensive. Especially with mine actually being 8 cartridges total. I'm not totally convinced the current really reduced all that much. I also tried closing the mid level intake but that realy didnt do much either. The Emporer400 bio-wheel are adjustable I think they pump 400gph.
