What filter for a 30 gal?
Still doing reashurch on my next tank. I'm going with a sand bottom and several plants. What is a good filter to use?

If you can afford it I would go with an Xp2. It is a canister so it is a bit pricey, but it gets the job done very fast. if you cant afford it I would go with an aquaclear. I believe I have an aquaclear 50 on my 29g. I could be wrong.

I have an aquaclear 50 on my 29 gal as well, with a prefilter. It's still cycling though, so I can't say how well it works just yet.

I think they work very well, and both of you would be happy with it.

A bio-wheel just has a floss pouch with carbon in it along with a little wheel that barely ever spins. or touches water. from what I have experienced they don't really do that great of a job. I had one on my 46 gallon and now I have an Xp3 on it which is the next step up from an Xp2. The canisters are a lot better in my opinion because they force the water through everything before exiting, meaning that all the water and poo and whatever else might be in the water is being exposed to all the beneficial bacteria and being caught in sponges. The Xp2 also runs very quiet, there is no trickling because of the spray bar. But once again if you cant afford that, there is always the aquaclear50. It is the closest you can get (that I could find) to being a canister filter. If you still have any more questions feel free to ask, id be glad to help!

I have a equlipse 6 gallon tank now and it uses a bio wheel. I agree the little thing stops then turns and stops then turns but seems to do a good job. the filter and the heater are things i would not whant to skimp on. the xP2 why that one and not the xP1? there seems to be a ton of different filters it can use whats the best?

The Xp2 holds more media and is more powerful. By what is the best do you mean media? if so I have activated carbon, bio balls, sponge. it seems to do a great job.

I find sponge filters to be the most affordable way to go. Put a tetra filter on each side and you have some good filtration going

I have a bio-wheel...and they "stop and turn" if the water level in the tank is too low for the filter pump to consistently draw enough water up and into that filter compartment with the charcoal/pad and wheel. I've noticed that will happen when I'm siphoning water out for water changes (or as I'm adding the new stuff back in) until the water level is high enough for it to get a good, consistent draw.

endymion500, I find that sponge filters lack in the bacteria department. they do a good job on sucking the poo out but not so much housing bacteria.

the water level is at the very top and the draw tube is very low in the tank only a few inches above the gravel. it has been like that sine i got the tank so i never questioned it. i cant change the flow and even if i remove the filter pad there is no change. o well it works but i want something with a little more humph for my next tank.

I was thinking more like this...
http://www.northcoastmarines.com/bioballs.htm
It os probably very similiar but I know these do the trick. AND, all the media does not have to be brand specific. I bought mine from that place.
