Filter question

I have a Top Fin Power Filter (20gal) stuck on my 10gal tank.

It has a "filtration rate" dial on it. The girl at the pet store said to turn it to "low" when I'm feeding so that the flakes, etc, don't get sucked into the filter.

My question:

Could I just turn it off (unplug it) for the 2-3 minutes that is feeding time, or is the stopping/starting going to be harder on the motor than if I just turn it down at feeding time?

i actually wouldn't even mess with it. if you're feeding the proper amount, the fish will eat all of the food before it even has time to settle into the tank, much less get pulled into the filter.

Thanks for the answer. I guess it's not like the filter's going to live a long time anyway, so I should probably mess with it as little as possible.

Yea, I'd leave it on and feed them in the corner furthest from the filter. A lot of flakes will just slowly sink if you stick them a little under the surface and let them go.

I have a little feeding ring that I drop the flakes into. It keeps the current from the filter from pushing them around too much.
