Top Fin 30 filter - backing up?

I'm currently using the Top Fin 30 filter that was included with the 29g starter kit I picked up recently. I'm planning on adding a new/stronger/better filter towards teh end of the month when I get the 'ok' from the wife. I'm using the Bio 3 cartridges in the filter presently. It's the one with the blue sponge then mechanical(I think) filter on the other side of it. I have the sponge facing the tank, of course. It's been working fine, then today I noticed that the filter is backed up. It's pouring out of both the the 'filtered' side and the side that is drawing up the water, so the water is being dumped in 2 spots, and some is not getting filtered because of this. How much concern do I have here?

Also, how often should these bio 3 cartridges be changed out? The sponge stays til it's worn out I understand, and the other side?

Thanks for the advice.

put some tank water in a bucket and wash the cartridge off. You can scrub with your fingers to chase away any large chunks. It won't come clean, but it'll clear it up enough to keep using until you get your new filter.

Just wash the white sponge part in tank water as Tavel suggests. It should come for 2more weeks.

We'll clean that part each week when we do the pwc and cleaning on the tank.

This makes a great replacement to the bags and saves you a ton over time. Just cut it to fit the same size as the bag. They last a long time and we've been using some since early last summer.
