Best way to change HOB Filter Media?

I am nearing my first time that I will have to change my filter media, and am wondering what the best way to do this is. Thanks in Advance.

Just rinse the filter media out in used tank water and continue using it until it falls apart. When you do have to change it leave a piece of the old filter media in with the new to seed it with good bacteria. Only change half the media at one time. I know the manufacturer says change it once a month but that is just a way to make money on their part. Our most experienced fishkeepers manage their filter media in the way I suggested.

Yep you got it and that will preserve your beneficial bacteria that has colonized in the filter media.

You might want to consider:

for your filter. We use it instead of the regular filter bags or cartridges. You can cut it to any size filter and it's really good - we've been using this for many months and haven't had to replace one yet. Saves a TON of money over time.. to spend on other fish stuff.

I just want to add one thing to the good advice already given.

Changing depends on if there is charcoal or ammonia lock in your filter media. IF there is, discard those materials, reuse the fiber or sponge part of your filter as Carol and Dave have told you.
